How Important is Your Headrest in an Auto Accident? What is the correct position to help reduce the risk of whiplash injury? First, you want the top of the headrest to be at least as high as the top of the head. Second, you want the back of the head to be at least 2” from the front of the headrest, although it is preferable for this distance to be less than 1”. Please note than in some vehicles it will not be possible to achieve the correct position due to poor head restraint design.
Here is a head restraint that cannot be properly adjusted:
However, there is a device that can added to the seat to achieve better head restraint geometry called an Add-On Headrest: For information on this device go to: http://www.addonheadrest.com/ Before buying a car, it is always a good idea to review head restraint and car safety ratings at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website: http://www.iihs.org/
